Pools and spas with a building licence application lodged with a local council after November 5th, 2001 are required to have a barrier which complies with Australian Standard AS1926.1 1993, installed between the pool or spa and any door from the house which would otherwise give direct access from the house to that pool or spa. The wall of the house can form part of the barrier, provided any opening windows are protected by properly installed security screens or window opening restricted to a maximum of 100mm.
