It’s that time of year again, temperatures are rising and you’re starting to think about keeping cool in the heat. A big topic of conversation around Australia is whether a pool is a good purchase. Whether you use it as an aquatic playground for the children, a safe haven to relax or a place to hone your fitness, a pool is a great way to while away the summer.
Buying a swimming pool is a major purchase, so you need to decide whether it’s right for you. Here’s some commonly asked questions people usually consider before buying one.
How Long Will It Take To Install?
It’s a question with no one definitive answer. The time it takes to install a pool can depend on many factors. This can include the time of the year, the type of soil on your property, whether your ground is flat as well as being accessible.
It also very much depends on the company you choose to install that pool and the availability of the team to complete the job. Every pool project has to be approved by the council which can take anything between three to five weeks, so the fastest turnaround would probably be a month.
Do You Need Council Approval To Build One?
Yes, if it is 300mm or more deep, but do not be put off by this answer as the good news is that if you buy a swimming pool from a supplier they will get a building permit and do this for you. The pool is classed as a major structure and therefore needs to be authorised, however you don’t need to seek permission from your neighbours.
Will I Need A Pool Fence?
Again that’s a yes. All pools or spas across Australia with a depth of 300mm or more will need a pool fence and every state may have different requirements.
Legislation was introduced to prevent accidents and deaths by drowning. In WA, the fence must be at least 1.2 metres high. The gates should be self-closing and self-latching with the latch itself positioned at about 1.5 metres from the ground.
This safety barrier will be inspected every four years by a pool inspector from your local council.
How Much Will It Cost?
This is probably the question we get asked the most, how much will a pool set you back? Fibreglass pools are cheaper than concrete ones. All pools come in different shapes and sizes which means they are not equal when it comes to cost.
Pool price varies. Prices can start from as low as $16,000 and rise to up to $50,000 for the larger ones. The larger the pool and the more add-ons you require the higher costs will become. Any good pool company will try to tailor the features of the pool with your expectations and establish the best one for your budget.
