How To Look After Your Pool In Extreme Heat
Splashing about in the sun is probably what attracted you to having a pool in the first place. After all, home swimming pools are made for summer right? But when the temperature jumps up the rising heat can cause issues that damage your pool and stop it from running at its best.
But don’t worry, we’re here to talk you through the extra steps you can take to look after your pool in extreme heat.
Keep An Eye On Your pH Level
You don’t need to be a scientist to look after your pool, but you do need to be aware of its pH level. It keeps tabs on the acidity in the water and is the most important measure for maintaining your pool. You want your pH level to be between 7.4 and 7.6.
If it’s too high more minerals will come out and you’ll get cloudy, murky water that nobody wants to splash about in. Also, your chlorine won’t be able to work properly, no matter how much you use, which will cost you more money.
If your pH level is too low you’ll start to get itchy eyes and skin, and the water will begin to corrode everything in sight – from your pump to your entry ladder.
To stop your pool, and your health, getting damaged it’s best to check your chlorine and pH level every couple of days throughout the summer, don’t just assume everything is working properly.
More People Means More Cleaning
When the sun is at its hottest, you want to be able to jump straight in the pool to cool off, so will your kids, and most likely your neighbours. But when more people are using the pool, it will need more frequent cleaning. This isn’t the time to get lazy!
Algae loves the sun, and when it’s really hot it grows rapidly. So, make sure you are regularly brushing the sides of the pool and don’t forget those hard-to-reach areas such as the entrance ladder.
If the night-time temperature doesn’t drop much during the summer, your pool won’t get the chance to really cool down, which is what helps naturally kill the bugs in the water. All of this means you will need to use more chlorine to do the job, so make sure you are fully stocked up.
Remember, the sun’s UV rays break down chlorine, so if it’s been a scorcher and you’ve had the cover off all day you’ll need monitor those chlorine levels more frequently.
Don’t forget your pool if you go on holiday, as you’ll need to ask someone to check on it while you’re away to keep that algae at bay.
