What Is The Best Way To Clean A Pool Deck?

It’s something most pool owners dread – how to clean the paving area around a pool. Nobody wants a sparkling crystal-clear pool next to an unsightly stained decking area.

How do you ‘pave’ the way to transform green, grimy slabs that are potentially hazardous, especially when wet and slippery? We have tips to make the pool deck area glean, after an intensive clean.

Avoid neglecting the deck

To get rid of unwanted grime, sand, grit and any other debris that settles on the surface incorporate the cleaning of your paving area into your general pool maintenance schedule.

Water that splashes out of the pool can cause corrosive chlorine and chemicals to land on your paving slabs which may lead to permanent damage.

If your pool gets lots of use, is located near trees, in a polluted, built-up area, or on the coast, the deck will be more prone to becoming dirty. Pets, especially dogs, bring in dirt and leave marks with their paw prints.

Tackling the grime

Sweep away the entire area removing leaves, debris and layers of dust. Get rid of any weeds creeping through pavers to destroy all the roots.

Clear any obstacles on the deck, such as toys and outdoor furniture. A hose and general detergent can’t match the power and ease of a pressure washer. If you don’t own one, hire one.

You can buy specialist solutions from hardware stores to clean concrete, stone and brick areas. A tried and tested option is to mix a cup of oxygenated bleach (not chlorinated) with water – a cupful of this type of bleach into a gallon of warm water will suffice.

For very dirty areas around your pool area, add a squirt of washing-up liquid as well. Let the solution sit on the surface to soak deep into any pits and pores before scrubbing the deck thoroughly with a stiff bristle brush. If you want to make it less arduous, swap the manual brush for an electric one which can also be hired from a DIY store.

Once scrubbed, use a garden hose to rinse any cleaning solution. Ensure this dirty water flows away from the pool. Once dry and clean, seal the area to make it waterproof.

Keep it clean - make it gleam

If you see any more stains develop, act quickly on the particular dirty area. Wet towels and pool toys will easily collect mould and mildew, so encourage pool guests to hang their towels after use. Small objects, like hair pins, can create rust stains on your deck, so be mindful of any items which may corrode.

Pool maintenance is vital to the upkeep of your pool and pool area, but also for you and your family’s safety. While it may not seem pertinent that you miss a few days of water testing or brushing out the grime from your pavers, the long run may have more consequences. Bacteria and other nasty substances can find their way into the pool and make you sick. Keeping up with your maintenance, even just half an hour each day put aside to make sure everything is in working order, can make all the difference.

If you haven’t maintained your pool deck, algae, moss and other green stuff can start to grow. If it has already grown, you can get rid of it through purchasing a stiff brush and mixing a chlorine and water solution. Then, all you have to do is scrub until your deck is clean again. You can also use a pressure washer if you own one, or you can hire one if you don’t want to spend the money buying one.
